Vice – 7th May 2013
Multi-award winning and extensively exhibited photographer Michael Jang has spent the past four decades earning a reputation as one of the world’s leading portrait photographers. His subjects have included Jimi Hendrix, Ronald Reagan, and Robin Williams, among others. Simultaneously, he has presented multiple personal projects that have seen him documenting groups and subcultures from around the world; Beverly Hills Celebrity parties, the youth of Castro’s Cuba, South City Gangs and West Rodeos.
“His images are allegories of particular points in time, characterized by their candid honesty, decisiveness, and vivacity”
Presented as part of a new exhibition at the Stephen Wirtz Gallery, “The Jangs” is a series of humorous and intimate photographs taken of Michael’s family during the 1970s in California while he was a student at Cal Arts. Far from the average family photo shoot, the images were recently purchased by the Museum of Modern Art. You can read his interview with Vice about the collection here.
