Photography exhibition: Mike Brodie – A period of Juvenile Prosperity
Decisive Moment? Choose a picture
There was no pre-conceived intention to document or record – Brodie just followed his heart and the camera became an extension of himself and his experiences. Having said that, this image looks like a fashion story or a campaign for the clothing company ‘All Saints Spitalfields’. There is the word “Free” on the one man’s knuckles and he is helping the other guy escape! It feels a bit set-up but is still a loose, wonderful caught moment.
I think Mike Brodie’s work with these travelers is unique but there are examples in current advertising that have used the feel of these images to sell clothes imbued with the feeling of freedom, escape and individuality – such as Levi’s current ads. The rough edges are taken off in order to sell in the mainstream, of course.
Which Image? Which Room?
I would hang this photo in my home. I Love this time of day; the sunshine looks inviting and there is a perfect sense of freedom that makes me want to be in that moment, feeling the wind in my hair and the warmth on my back – my whole life ahead of me.
