100 Leading Ladies, a project by Image Source Photographer Nancy Honey, is a epic exhibition of classic photographic portraiture at London’s Somerset House. Image Source Art Director Siri Vorbeck walks us through this epic show
Nancy Honey has been photographing for more than 30 years and has studied Fine Art, Graphic Design and Photography in both US and UK. Her work has been widely published and exhibited internationally and she has received numerous awards, commissions and was a Fellow of Photography at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. Her pictures are in many international collections, and her commercial work includes editorial, corporate, advertising and private commissions.
100 Leading Ladies will be on show in the Courtyard Galleries at Somerset House, from 2nd-26th of October. The 100 British senior women photographed and interviewed for this timely book helped transform the perception of what is possible for women to achieve in their lives. Award-winning international photographer Nancy Honey invited each of these Leading Ladies to choose a place where she goes for inspiration for her portrait setting. This gives the viewer further insight into the lives, personalities and character of these admirable women.Interviewed by former Times journalist Hattie Garlick, each woman, in her own words, shares valuable advice and personal reflection. The reader will meet well-known women like Germaine Greer, as well as those who are admired by their peers in their respective fields, like Averil Mansfield, the UK’s first female professor of surgery.
There are politicians, scientists, restaurateurs, CEOs, authors, Britain’s oldest working supermodel and much more. Many of them are the first women in their fields. All of them lived through a remarkable era of change that has affected us all. One hundred women, one hundred portraits, one hundred unique stories that shine a guiding light on the paths they took to success in their fields and in life, so that younger women can also find their way.
Each viewer will find the image, the individual that inspires them.
The exhibition highlights the importance of female leadership. The photographic approach itself is very ‘classic’, a strength of the show and this approach gives the impression that you know who these women are and what they achieved. Nancy Honey has said she only had very limited time with each woman and had never seen the location beforehand. She had a short time to get the woman to relax and be at ease as much as possible and was looking for a sense of pride within each person.
